Judith Elsasser - Canadian portrait and figurative artist.

The Portrait Process and Fees

Upon first meeting a few details will be discussed:  basic composition, size, pose, type of clothing, tone, background, subject and purpose.  Once the preliminary design, by either a photo or small sketch is approved the painting will begin.  When completed and approved the portrait will be delivered.

Sittings:  Photographs - The portrait can be done from photographs, usually this involves one session with the sitter which should last 2 - 3 hours.  The latter may accommodate both photographs and sketches.  From Life - This  requires a significant commitment from both artist and sitter (anywhere from 10 to 50 hours).

Timing:  The period from sittings to delivery of a completed portrait can range for a couple of months to more than a year.  This time frame is discussed as part of the normal commissioning process.  As a rule it is best to provide as much time as possible for curing of the oil paint, among other things, prior to delivery.

All aspects as outlined above are, indeed subject to discussion.  The goal is to arrive at the best possible family or corporat keepsake, within a given budget.  A portrait is commissioned with tremendous appreciation for the sitter and vision of capturing him or her on canvas; both artist and client should expect a work of art that will be cherised and valued for generations.
